Irresponsibility

04/10/2015

A leading Polish Catholic official, Krzysztof Charamsa, has just ‘come out’ as gay, admitting he has a Catalan partner and calling on his church to finally take a more enlightened attitude to sexual differences.

I don’t believe in any god, and really don’t see how gay people can continue to be members of religious organisations that persistently deny their right to love the people they love. But at least Monsignor Charamsa is challenging his church to get real, and that’s surely something to be admired.

On the eve of a synod that will discuss such ‘moral’ questions as sexuality, the Vatican has condemned his public statement as ‘grave and irresponsible’ – simply because it’s calling unwelcome media attention to the church. Sorry, church, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. If anyone’s being irresponsible here, it’s you – and you know it damn well.

Monsignor Charamsa is quite simply being honest, for he’s decided it’s time to stop lying. And if the church thinks honesty is irresponsible, that shows us once again where it stands morally – deep down in the ditch.

Krzysztof, dziękuję bardzo, thank you very much. You’re a brave man who has stood up for your love, your humanity – and, yes, your faith.
